
Retired wind turbine blades turned into bicycle shelters in Denmark ๐ฉ๐ฐ We usually focus more on energy storage, but this wind energy case was too interesting not to share. In Aalborg, Denmark, retired wind turbine blades have been repurposed into bicycle shelters instead of being sent directly to landfill or shredded. Rather than breaking the blades down completely, large sections of the original curved structure were kept intact and reused as roofing โ making use of the strength and shape the blades already have. It sounds like a small design project, but it points to a much bigger issue: what happens to wind turbine blades once they reach the end of their service life? Unlike steel towers, blades are made from composite materials such as fiberglass, carbon fiber and thermoset resins, which are much harder to separate and recycle. That is why direct reuse is starting to attract more attention. And Aalborg is not the only example. In Rotterdam, retired blades have been turned into playground structures. In the U.S., old blades have been reused in pedestrian bridge projects. Researchers have also explored using blade sections in housing and flood-protection structures. Of course, these ideas are not without debate. Some argue that projects like these are too small to deal with the scale of future blade retirements, while others have raised questions around the long-term safety and maintenance of fiberglass composite materials in public spaces. These discussions are valuable too.
