Tesla Changes the Game: Rent Two Powerwalls for $35/Month Tesla is changing the way it offers Powerwall in Texas. More precisely, this time, Tesla doesn't necessarily have to sell them. In some parts of Texas, Tesla has launched a new Powerwall rental program. Users can install two Powerwalls, with a standard first-year rental price of $122/month. If they also join the Tesla Electric Backup electricity plan, they can receive an additional $87/month credit. That brings the actual first-year rental cost down to just $35/month + taxes and fees, while standard installation comes with no installation fee. These batteries are normally managed and dispatched by Tesla Electric: charging when electricity prices are low, supplying power to the home when prices are high, or selling electricity back to the grid. Powerwall is not only a backup power source for the home anymore—it is also becoming a distributed energy storage asset that Tesla can operate over the long term. This model is increasingly similar to Base Power. Base Power also doesn’t rush to sell batteries to customers. Instead, it owns the equipment itself, providing households with electricity and backup power services, while generating revenue through battery dispatch and grid-balancing services. 🤔 If someone says Tesla is "copying Base Power," that would be inaccurate, because Tesla had already experimented with low-cost Powerwall + grid dispatch with Green Mountain Power back in 2017. What's different this time is that Tesla is bringing Powerwall rentals, Tesla Electric electricity service, and unified battery dispatch more fully into its own system. The two companies are approaching the same destination from different directions: turning residential energy storage into a long-term, operational power asset. #Tesla #Powerwall #EnergyStorage #BESS #EnergyTransition #DistributedEnergy #VirtualPowerPlant #GridServices
