SolarEdge C&I BESS CSS-OD 107: Expandable up to 2.1MWh with Less Than 20ms Backup Switching

<h2>Single cabinet with 107kWh capacity, expandable up to 2.1MWh per project</h2><p>SolarEdge has further disclosed product details of its new-generation commercial and industrial (C&amp;I) energy storage system, <strong>CSS-OD 107</strong>. From a system design perspective, CSS-OD 107 adopts modular architecture. Each basic system configuration includes one <strong>107kWh battery cabinet</strong> combined with a <strong>29.9kW or 49.9kW battery inverter</strong>.</p><p>Users can select different power configurations based on project load requirements, PV installation size, electricity pricing structures, and backup power needs, while gradually expanding system capacity by adding additional battery cabinets.</p><p>According to SolarEdge, the <strong>CSS-OD 107 can be deployed starting from a single 107kWh battery cabinet, with a maximum project expansion capacity of 2.1MWh</strong>. The system supports both indoor and outdoor installation and is primarily designed for small- and medium-sized commercial and industrial users, including factories, warehouses, commercial buildings, hotels, agricultural facilities, and small industrial parks.</p><p>Unlike large-scale grid-side energy storage projects, these users typically do not require tens of MWh of storage capacity from the beginning. Instead, they focus more on whether the storage system can match their existing PV capacity, electricity consumption patterns, and investment budgets.</p><p>Companies can initially install a smaller-scale system and expand capacity later based on actual operating performance and future energy needs. This approach can reduce upfront investment pressure while keeping flexibility for future expansion.</p><p><img src="https://energyplanet.oss-cn-shenzhen.aliyuncs.com/uploads/images/20260728213936_86a4b982.png" alt="" loading="lazy" decoding="async" /></p><h2>First integrated backup reserve capability, switching time below 20 milliseconds</h2><p>When looking only at capacity, the CSS-OD 107 does not represent a major increase compared with SolarEdge's previous-generation <strong>102.4kWh product</strong>. However, the key improvement is not the battery capacity itself, but rather the upgrade in overall system functionality.</p><p>Compared with the previous CSS-OD 102.4, one of the most important upgrades of CSS-OD 107 is that <strong>backup reserve capability has been integrated into the battery inverter</strong>. SolarEdge states that CSS-OD 107 is its first C&amp;I energy storage system featuring integrated backup reserve capability. When the grid experiences a failure or power outage, the system can switch into backup operation mode and continue supplying power to critical loads, with a switching time of <strong>less than 20 milliseconds</strong>.</p><p>For ordinary commercial users, a power outage may only temporarily affect lighting and office equipment. However, for factory control systems, data equipment, cold-chain warehouses, communication infrastructure, and certain continuous production processes, even short interruptions can cause equipment shutdowns, data loss, or product damage. Therefore, C&amp;I customers' demand for energy storage is gradually expanding from the initial goal of increasing PV self-consumption and reducing electricity costs toward improving power continuity and energy resilience.</p><p>However, it should be noted that CSS-OD 107 currently only provides <strong>backup reserve capability</strong>. According to SolarEdge's plan, the actual backup function will be activated through a firmware update expected to be released in 2026. Therefore, it should not be assumed that all installed CSS-OD 107 systems can immediately operate in off-grid backup mode.</p><h2>More than just a battery cabinet: Integrated management of PV, storage, and loads</h2><p>Beyond hardware improvements, CSS-OD 107 will also connect with SolarEdge's <strong>ONE for C&amp;I energy management platform</strong>. The platform can analyze various project parameters, including PV generation, commercial load profiles, electricity prices, feed-in tariffs, and weather conditions, to optimize charging and discharging strategies for the energy storage system.</p><p>If a project operates in markets with time-of-use tariffs or dynamic electricity pricing, the system can adjust charging and discharging schedules according to price fluctuations, further improving project economics. This also reflects SolarEdge's product strategy. The company is not simply selling a battery cabinet, but rather building an integrated ecosystem that combines <strong>PV inverters, energy storage systems, power plant controllers, and energy management software</strong>. Once transported to the project site, installers mainly need to complete equipment positioning, electrical connections, and commissioning.</p><p>This reduces on-site construction work and lowers the risk of installation errors. SolarEdge Designer, the company's design tool, can also provide recommendations for storage sizing and project economic analysis based on PV capacity, electricity consumption profiles, and other site parameters.</p><p>For installers and EPC companies, completing system design, equipment installation, commissioning, and later operation and maintenance within a unified product and software ecosystem can help shorten project delivery cycles.</p><h2>Final Thoughts</h2><p>In addition to the newly introduced <strong>107kWh CSS-OD 107</strong>, SolarEdge currently offers other C&amp;I energy storage products, including <strong>102.4kWh and 197kWh solutions</strong>. Among them, the <strong>CSS-OD 197</strong> provides a single-cabinet capacity of <strong>197kWh</strong>, with a maximum project expansion capacity of <strong>4MWh</strong>, making it more suitable for larger commercial and industrial applications.</p><p>Through different capacity configurations, SolarEdge is expanding its product portfolio from small commercial projects to larger industrial energy storage applications. This also reflects a clear trend emerging in Europe's C&amp;I energy storage market. Competition among companies is no longer limited to battery capacity, cycle life, and equipment pricing.
